Podcast: 51 days with Homer

Broadcast for the “Radio Pages” prepared by the students of E2 of the 3rd Primary School of Agios Dimitrios.
Achilles is a ten-year-old boy who has been blind since he was born. He lived in Chios and had never seen the beautiful landscapes around him. He had no friends, because on his island he did not have a school for blind people, and most of them laughed at him. His only consolation was his poetry, his music, and his favorite four-legged friend, his dog, Orion, who helped him explore the world. He dreamed of becoming a poet as the ancient Homer who admired him. His parents decided to move to Athens for Achilles to be able to attend the school for the blind, learn to read with the special writing and make his dream come true.
On the boat, as he was strolling with his dog, it began barking loudly and scratching a door. Achilles found the handle and opened the door. Orion drove him quickly to the other end of the room when suddenly a mighty wave shook the ship and a melodious sound was heard. The child palpably caught a lyre in his hands. He started playing a melody and around him, the boat transformed into an ancient trireme. He finds himself playing the lyre next to an elderly man who has recited poems. In the lyrics she listens to words such as Trojan horse, beautiful Helen, Agamemnon, and understands that Homer is next to him.
Each time Achilles plays his lyre, he is transferred to the ancient times next to Homer. Homer teaches him, as he was blind himself, that nothing can stop you from dreaming if you have a will and a belief in yourself. Achilles within 51 days, just as the days of the Trojan war, he learned to read books and poems and to write his own poems. He had all the prerequisites to become a great poet, such as Homer who admired and his dog always helped him in the difficult moments.
