Description:

A song composed by lower secondary school students. The inspiration comes from words of the great poet Vasilis Michaelides, a poem which vividly describes the beautiful and unique nature of Cyprus, the particularities of the island’s location but also the hostility that this country has suffered from “stronger” nations. The melodies are simple, traditional in sound but are arranged polyphonically, thus reflecting the eastern and western influences on Cypriot culture. The children have spontaneously and without any suggestion on the teacher’s part chosen a slow, sad melody which also rises in triumphant peaks. In this way the student-composers portray love for their country boarding to anxiety for its future. The instruments are near-traditional in color. The students have chosen the piano for harmonic accompaniment alongside the violin, flute and percussion.
